4 simple writing tips

My quest to become an expert writer is not yet complete, but I have journeyed far enough to know a few simple tips that can make a huge difference. These tips are useful for everything from the quick email to the epic term paper. Make sure to leave a comment with your own writing tips.

Just start writing

Don’t worry about ensuring that a masterpiece flows from your fingers to the keyboard the first time. Just get words down on the page. After a few minutes of writing, your brain adjusts to the current task and it becomes easier. If you get stuck, jump to the next section and come back later.

Edit yourself

This is simple, but it is the most important small change that you can make. Once you finish writing, go back and read what you write. You will find things that you want to change. You must read everything you write at least once before you send it off. This includes text messages.

Simplify

Can you say the same thing with less or simpler words? Only use big words if they have a more specific meaning then their simpler counterparts. Cut out whole sentences if they are unnecessary. Eliminate unnecessary words. The title of this section was originally called "simplify simplify simplify."

Be nice to your readers

Break up those lengthy paragraphs. If you write so that it is easy for the reader to skim, your readers will get more info because the important points will be obvious. Depending on what you are writing you should use bold to guide your readers to the important points. When used sparingly, it can greatly enhance the reader’s experience.
